Hot take; it’s a very welcome development that many prominent US conservatives are breaking from Zionism and are becoming outspokenly anti-zionist. Figures like Candace Owens, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Dave Smith, and Tucker Carlson.
The US right has been the bulwark of American support for the genocidal ethno state. This is rapidly evaporating.
I’m on the left. I have profound disagreements with these figures in many areas. However I’m very happy these people are taking a principled stand against Israel. These people may have noxious politics in some areas but they’re not anti semitic. I’ve seen several threads on Twitter/X and on FB very recently saying figures like comedian Dave Smith should ” get the wall” This is insane. This is like the Comintern’s unhinged early 1930s ” Third Period ” idiocy in which anyone who wasn’t a Communist was a ” social fascist”. FDR was a fascist, social democrats were fascist, everyone was a fascist. This played a powerful role in enabling the rise of actual fascism in 1933.
A few years ago everyone was canceling Glen Greenwald because he was on Tucker Carlson a few times and for a time was a frequent guest on FOX. Seriously no one this century has done more to fight fascism than Glen Greenwald, he literally risked his life taking down Bolsanaro in Brazil. In the early years of this decade liberals were censorship crazy against people disagreeing with their favorite issues-C 19, the Ukraine proxy war, etc. The liberal hysteria of 2020-22 or so was off the charts. (Most people who claim to be leftists are actually liberals and identify with their narratives and worldviews) People on the right, correctly, called this out. Their support for freedom of speech of course was hypocrital, as Greenwald was the first to point out. When Trump got in and people started protesting the genocide in Gaza, many figures on the right instantly forgot their free speech views and cemanded a crackdown. Greenwald himself, a free speech absolutist, got caught in the middle.
Not everything is “platforming a fascist”, sometimes one actually has to talk to people you disagree with. Saying people like Dave Smith (who is Jewish, and seems very well read, he’s discussed the Israeli anti-Zionist New Historians like Illan Pape and Schlomo Sand) should “get the wall” ,calling him a “kapo” and refusing to work with people like him powerfully enables the actual fascism of Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin, Larry Ellison , Nick Land, and their neoliberal acolytes like Bari Weiss.
Humanity can’t afford another Third Period. As Max Blumenthal said, this only shows the failure of the professional sectarian left.
